Yumberry is a Chinese superfruit! It can have a profound impact on your health. Your body is attacked daily by chemical compounds that oxidize and damage your cells. The yumberry or yang mei as it is known in China, is an antioxidant powerhouse. It is full of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) potent antioxidants that give this fruit its color and help protect your cells against oxidative stress.

Along southern China's Yangtze river grows the strawberry tree or yang mei. This exotic superfruit is related to the more common bayberry. It is packed with vitamins and other nutrients. This oriental fruit is ripe and ready for harvesting in late June and early July. It has a short picking season and so is only available fresh for just a few weeks throughout the year.

For this reason you probably won't see this popular Chinese red berry fresh at your local supermarket or whole foods store. It is being imported as a juice usually in combination with other functional juices like pomegranate or blueberry. You can also find yang mei in a powdered form. It can be added to smoothies, yogurt or other healthy foods.

Yang mei has been grown by the Chinese for literally thousands of years. During the height of the season it is sold fresh at roadside stands and by street vendors through out southern Shanghai province.

The Chinese waxberry as it is sometimes referred to has a tart taste with sweet undertones. It has been compared in the West to taste like a cross between a pomegranate and raspberry or strawberry. It is round in shape with a bumpy outer layer and ranges in color from red to deep purple. The deeper the color the sweeter the fruit. It has a pit or hard seed inside similar to a cherry.

The Chinese also prize the yang mei fruit for its health inducing properties as well. Traditionally yang mei has been used to:

  • Improve cardiovascular function
  • Assist with digestion
  • Provide needed vitamins (vitamins C & B) and minerals
  • Fights arthritis and related conditions

The yumberry also contains powerful healing compounds like ellagic acid, quercitin, anthocyanins, flavanols, and many more important nutraceutical chemicals. You will be hearing more and more about this superfruit in the future as its health benefits become more widely known.
